Anne Benson

It’s been two and a half years, and I can still smell the sweat within those four walls and feel my growing apprehension as I walked into that CrossFit gym for the first time.  I was 210 pounds, incredibly out of shape, and was mentally in one of the lowest places I had ever been in my entire life.  Worthless.  I felt completely worthless.  I was also tired.  Tired of feeling out of shape.  Tired of working all of the time.  Tired of putting everyone else’s needs first in my life.  This low point in my life required action and change, and most of all, patience and consistency.  One small change led to the next, and with each change brought forth new confidence and a growing passion for this beautiful, yet tough, sport.  Two and a half years later, I find myself here…in a place where I am happy, healthy, balanced, and strong.
All of that being said, I wouldn’t have gotten to this place without the support and belief of the incredible CrossFit community.  Coaches like Angie and Melinda believed in me in a way I never believed in myself.  They pushed me and challenged me to be better, to do better, and to try new things I never dreamed possible.  This community has become my family.  Some of my closest friendships have come out of the people I have met at the gym.  In addition, this sport has become my escape from the craziness of life.  CrossFit has become the place where my whole world makes sense~the place where nothing else exists except the task at hand.  The place where I finally found myself and my value and discovered a strength within me I never dreamed possible!

I cannot picture my life without CrossFit, and I look forward to this next chapter at BAM.  It is going to be a place where my dreams continue to become reality, a place where I’ll continue to be challenged, and a place where the love for myself, my community, and this sport continues to grow!  I encourage you to join me on this incredible journey.  Take that leap of faith.  Step out of your comfort zone.  I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Ant Hernandez

Hey everyone, My name is Anthony Hernandez a.k.a. Coach Ant. I started doing CrossFit in December 2016, almost by accident. After graduating college, I stopped in a local gym with my resume in hand for a free trial workout. Honestly looking for a job more so than becoming a CrossFit athlete; little did I know it was the beginning of a journey of growth, friendship, and leadership as well as finding more of my potential. I feel like it is safe to say that I drank the Kool-Aid! And let me tell you it’s been one of the best decisions of my life. Not only does CrossFit push you physically and mentally, but also emotionally! All things I was very familiar with in my military experience. Physical, mental, and emotional strength seem to be the trifecta for a balanced and stable life. This is a lot bigger than just sweating in a workout or having any specific aesthetic.

Today, I continue to do CrossFit because of the strong community, the trifecta previously mentioned which allows me to show up ready for the challenges that arise in life. Facing and overcoming hardships in the gym translates into confidence, self esteem and the ability to persevere when the going gets tough.

We have all heard the phrase “Blood is thicker than water.” The actual phrase is, “The blood of the covenant, is thicker than the water of the womb” meaning those who spill blood together, face adversity, and overcome it together create a bond stronger than those who have shared a womb or are actual blood “family.” I say that to express my love and passion for the sport of CrossFit. It has changed me for the better and continues to do so every workout! I highly recommend giving it a try. You will be happy you did!!

We become our habits; choose growth and strength and watch things shift. You’ve got this!! Believe in yourself, I believe in you!

I used to be one of those people who said “Crossfit? No way! I don’t want to look like that.” It wasn’t until I actually saw a workout on YouTube that I was interested. There’s definitely a stigma around it and I’m wondering if it came from people that were too lazy to actually try it or what! There’s so many reasons I love it, a few being strength, coordination, endurance, mental toughness, my body, and most of all, the community! I started out a little over a year ago. I could barely lift the barbell, I had no idea what any of the movements were, and I was barely able to complete a scaled workout. The people in the class (that I now call my friends) and coaches helped me get the movements down, they kept me going when I wanted to give up, and they always made me feel included. Now I am lifting more than I ever thought was possible and I rarely miss a 5am class! I love being part of this community because everyone is so supportive all the time and we push each other to crush our PRs so we just keep getting stronger and stronger! It’s so great to get to the end of a of the program and your new PR is 10 or more pounds greater than it was just 10 weeks ago! I used to just look lean and little and now I just look strong! The coaches at BAM have changed my life and the way I think about fitness and I’m so blessed to be able to learn from them!
